What are the differences between the Atlas and Axis?

A

Atlas: Helps nod “yes”

  • Vertebra C1
  • Has no body or spinous processes.

Axis: Helps nod “no”

  • Vertebra C2
  • Has a knob (dens) which projects superiority from the body. Called the atlantoaxial joint.
