the axilla Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the axillary region?
Anterior: pectoralis major/minor Posterior : scapula with subscapularis muscle Medial edge: serratus anterior Lateral edge : intertubercular sulcus Apex: clavicle Base: axillary fascia
Describe the axillary region?
associated with armpit that begins around the cervicoaxillary canal( edge of first rib through armpit to axillary fascia (clavicpectoral fascia
What is a clinical correlation of this area?
everything that is critical to the upper limb passes here. artery damage can be fatal. nerve damage could be long term
What are the boundaries of the axillary sheath?
Fascia surrounding important structures
Derived from scalenus anterior/medius
Cont. with parts of calvipectoral fascia
What are the contents of the axillary fascia?
Axillary artery
Vein
Brachial plexus
What is the border of the axillary artery?
orgin: outer border of first rib to inferior border of teres major Divided into three parts: first part: one branch second part: two branches third part: three branches
What are the borders of the first part and what does it supply?
Superior thoracic artery:
Border: lateral border of first rib to medial border of Pec. Minor
Supplies: 1st & 2nd intercostal space and adjacent muscles
What are the arteries of the first part of the axillary artery?
Superior Thoracic artery
What are the arteries of the second part of the axillary artery?
Thoracoacromial trunk
Lateral thoracic artery
What are the muscles that Thoracoacromial trunk branches to?
Pectoral region
Acromion of scapula
Deltoid muscle
What are the muscles that the lateral thoracic artery branches to?
Serratus anterior
What are the arteries and the borders of the third part of the axillary artery?
Subscapular: branches to Ciircumflex scapular and thoracodorsal
Borders; Lateral border of he pectorlis minor to lateral border of teres major
What muscles do Circumflex artery supply?
Muscles of the scapula
What muscles do the Thoracodorsal artery supply?
Accompanies Thoracodorsal nerve and supplies the Lattisimus dorsi
