Brachial plexus Flashcards
Median root nerve
C5,6,7,8,T1
long thoracic
C5, C6, C7
Dorsal scapular
C5
Name the Cords?
Lateral cord (preaxial) C5-C7 roots Medial cord (preaxial) C8-T1 roots Posterior cord (postaxial) C5-T1
Suprascapular
C5; some C6
Subclavius
C5&C6
What is erbs palsy?
damage to the upper roots of brachial plexus. either by pulling or fall or birth. C5 & C6 is damaged bad traction so is C7
What are the symptoms of erbs palsy?
arms hang limp by side
can’t abduct, medial rotate arm
arm and forearm extended
What muscles are affected by Erbs palsy?
any muscle that is innervated by C5 & C6
if C7 affected triceps may be paralyzed
What is Klumps palsy?
damage to T1 of brachial plexus, sometime C8 and C7
What are the symptoms of Klumpes palsy?
Loss of intrinsic muscles of hand, particularly the interosseus muscles (also thumb and hypothenar MM)Hand “clawed”; extended at MP joint, flexed at IP joints
Anesthesia along medial part of arm (T1 dermatome)
Often involves injury to C7 & C8, where there will be loss of most digital flexors and extensors; hand motion weak if it exists at all
What is prefixed brachial plexus?
When C4 makes a contribution to brachial plexus
What is post fix brachial plexus?
when T2 makes a contribution to the brachial plexus
What is thoracic outlet syndrome?
compression of structure going through the cervicoaxillary space
What causes thoracic outlet syndrome?
Muscle hypertrophy due to weight lifting; e.g., hypertrophy of scalene muscles
Developmental abnormality, e.g., cervical rib
Tumor at base of lung, e.g., Pancost tumor
Trauma
