the appendicular skeleton Flashcards
What is the appendicular skeleton composed of?
Pectoral limb (fore limb) and pelvic limb (hind limb)
The forelimb is attached to the trunk by ____?
muscle
The bones of the forelimb include:
- clavicle
- scapula
- humerus
- radius and ulna
- carpus
- metacarpus
- digits
What use is the clavicle to a dog?
the clavicle is frequently absent in the dog.
It is vestigial bone (A structure that has lost its original function in the course of evolution)
usually present in the cat
what is the scapula
shoulder blade
What is the humerus
long bone forming the upper fore limb.
articulates proximally with the scapula and distally with the radius and ulna
Define radius and ulna
These are both long bones that lay side by side in the fore arm.
The radius is a rod shaped bone, shorter than the ulna.
Define the carpus bones
composed of seven short bones, the carpal bones, arranged in two rows. The proximal row has three bones
what are the metacarpal bones?
composed of 5 small, long bones.
‘bones joining between the wrist and toes’
What are the digits?
these are composed of the phalanges, which are long bones.
the bones of the hind limb are:
- pelvis
- Femur
- patella
- Tibia and fibula
- Tarsus
What is the pelvis?
consisting of two hip bones, its is the means by which the hind limb connects to the body.
What is the femur?
the long bone that forms the thigh.
What is patella? where is it found?
the kneecap. A sesamoid bone found within the tendon of insertion of the quadriceps femurs muscle.
Define the tibia and fibula.
They lie parallel to eachiother and form the lower leg. The tibia is much larger and lies more medial.
