vast landed estates in Latin America; shows how the Argentine government took land from the indigenous and planned to sell it to a class of small farmers but instead a small amount of people owned a lot of land
porfiriato
the regime of porfirio Diaz, who presided in Mexico; rewarded supporters and punished opponents; created political stability in Mexico that created a haven for foreign investment and increased foreign trade
liberalism
sought to create representative republics with strong central governments framed by constitutions that protected individual rights, the right to buy and sell property; important bc was the dominant ideology while the Americas were colonizing
