It occurred between Europe, Africa and America. French merchants sailed from Bordeaux or Nantes to the African coast, where they bought slaves from local chieftains. Branded and shackled, the slaves were brought across the Atlantic to America. They were then sold to plantation owners.

The exploitation of the slave trade made it possible to meet the growing demands in European societies for sugar, coffee and indigo. Port cities like Bordeaux and Nantes economically flourished due to the slave trade.
