What is micropthalmia?
Maldevelopment of the globe and its structures during foetal development
What is phthysis bulbi?
Globe trauma causing atrophy of the bulb
What can easily be confused with a small eye?
Enopthalmia - globe retracted due to ocular pain, reduced BCS
Anisocoria can have visual effect
What can cause buphthalmia ?
Primary glaucoma
Secondary glaucoma - intraocular tumour, chronic uveitis
What can be confused with buphthalmia ?
Exopthalmia - globe pushed forward
Corneal disease or different colour eyes can have a visual effect
How can you confirm if an eye is an abnormal size?
Ocular ultrasound
Advanced imaging e.g .CT if needed
What is chemosis?
Swelling of the conjunctiva
What is ocular proptosis?
eyelids trapped behind the globe equator of the globe
Especially in brachys after minor trauma
What are negative prognostic indicators of ocular proptosis?
Rupture of two or more extraocular muscles
Hyphaema may indicate retinal detachment
Why is ocular proptosis rare in cats?
Orbital rim completely bony so globe well protected from trauma
Why do cats have a higher risk of blinding the other eye if proptosis occurs?
Pulling at the level of the optic chiam
