The 5 Generalities Flashcards
First Generalization
Medicalization and demedicalization of deviance are cyclical phenomena; by defining the deviant as sick, Conrad and Schneider affirm the judgment of immorality is kept.
Second Generalization
Medical designation can foil a criminal definition; Extreme criminalization can allow medicalization to emerge and vice versa
Third Generalization
only a small segment of the medical profession is involved in the medicalization of deviance; only a few physicians themselves are claims makers
Fourth Generalization
when medical designations of deviance are proposed, they are based on the notion of compulsivity or without thought
Fifth Generalization
(most powerful) medicalization and demedicalization are political and not scientific achievements.
