What are Benzodiazepines?
preferred CNS depressants for anxiety and sleep
example of benzo?
valium, xanax, ativan
How dangerous are they deemed to be?
not very
How are they used medically?
relief of anxiety, muscle relaxant, induction of sleep, and withdrawal symptoms of alcohol and narcotic dependence and even treat insomnia
How do they effect the brain?
GABA is increased
How long are they in one’s system?
they are in the body for a long period of time because the liver converts them into metabolites making them as active as the original drug
Side effects?
drowsiness, lethargy, nausea, increase sensitivity to alcohol, nightmares, restlessness
Are they addicting?
not completely but can be
what is a withdrawal like?
it can mimic the effect of the drug, anxiety or insomnia
What can the mimic effect cause?
it can cause a doctor to think the drug needs to be increased in the user
Are benzodiazepines common amongst alcoholics?
yes, because they find the effects of benzos to be rewarding
What are frequent combinations used with benzo’s?
heroin or cocaine
What else can benzo’s be used for?
date rape
