The 4 Stages of Bone healing Flashcards
1
Q
Stage 1
A
Hematoma Formation:
- Blood vessels are broken during the fracture.
- Blood + fluid leak out to form a hematoma
2
Q
Stage 2
A
Fibrocartilage Callus Formation:
- New capillary growth + disposal of dead tissue by phagocytes
- 2. Connective tissue cells enter the area + form a mass of repair tissue.
3
Q
Stage 3
A
Bony Callus Formation:
- Osteoclast + osteoblast enter the area + multiply
- The fibrocartilage callus is replaced by spongy bone.

Q
Stage 4
A
Bone Remodelling:
- Over weeks + months the bone responds to “mechanical stress” to remodel.
- It creates a strong permanent patch at the fracture site.
