Hematoma Formation:

  1. Blood vessels are broken during the fracture.
  2. Blood + fluid leak out to form a hematoma

Stage 2

A

Fibrocartilage Callus Formation:

  1. New capillary growth + disposal of dead tissue by phagocytes
    - 2. Connective tissue cells enter the area + form a mass of repair tissue.

Stage 3

A

Bony Callus Formation:

  1. Osteoclast + osteoblast enter the area + multiply
  2. The fibrocartilage callus is replaced by spongy bone.

Bone Remodelling:

  1. Over weeks + months the bone responds to “mechanical stress” to remodel.
  2. It creates a strong permanent patch at the fracture site.
