Single melody line
An unaccompanied melody
Texture
Refers to the different line or layers in a piece of music - how many there are and how they interact with each other
Homophonic
A texture consisting of an accompanied melody, often described a choral or harmonic if the accompaniment moves mainly in the same rhythm as the melody
Contrapuntal/ polyphonic
A texture made up of two or more melodies, heard at the same time.
Melody and accompaniment
A melody line (usually at the top of the texture) with accompaniment
Imitative
The opening of a melody is copied in one or more other parts in the texture, while the original melody continues
Canonic
An imitative texture in which the copied versions of the melody are identical to the original
Layered
A texture consisting of several different ideas superimposed on top of each other
Antiphonal
Two instruments or vocal groups alternate with each other Ina musical conversation
Octaves
The melody line is doubled in one or more different octaves
Unison
Everyone performs the same note or melody
