Consonant
Describes notes that sound pleasing together
Harmony
Means anything to do with chords and chord progressions.
Dissonant
describes notes that seem to clash with each other
Diatonic
The music uses only the notes of the current key
Chromatic
The music uses only the notes that don’t belong to the key the music is currently in
Triad
Is a chord with three notes, with each note separated by an interval of a 3rd.
A lowercase numeral
Means that the chord is minor
e.g. ii
An uppercase numeral
Means that the chord is major
E.g. IV
Cadences
Is the term for a short chord progression that is used to end a musical phrase
Perfect
V-I (sounds strong and final)
Imperfect
Ends on chord V, e.g I-V or ii-V (sounds incomplete)
Plagal
IV-I (often used to sing ‘Amen’ to in church music)
Interrupted
V-VI (sounds like a surprise)
Tierce de picardie
When a piece in a minor key will end with a major tonic chord, rather than a minor one.
Pedal note or drone
A note that is held or repeated (usually in the bass), while the harmonies above it change
