Structure and form
The structure or form of a piece describes it’s overall shape- how many sections there are, and whether they repeat or differ.
Theme and variation
The variations are based on the theme and can differ in texture, melody, harmony, rhythm and tempo, or any combination of these.

Sonata form
Often used for the first movement of a work such as a symphony or concerto
Exposition=1st subject (tonic) 2nd subject (dominant/relative major)
Development= (various keys)
Recapitulation= 1st subject (tonic) 2nd subject (tonic)
Minuet and trio
MINUET TRIO MINUET
The minuet is an elegant dance in 3/4, with a moderate tempo. It is often contrasted with a trio, and used for the third movement of a work such as a symphony
Scherzo and trio
SCHERZO TRIO SCHERZO
Scherzo is italian for ‘joke’ and the scherzo is a lively dance in 3/4 with a fast tempo. Like the minuet, it is often combined with a trio and used for the third movement of a work.
Ground bass
A piece where the bass line is a repeated phrase. It was popular in the Baroque period.
Strophic

Through-composed

In a song, different music is used for each verse of lyrics
Da capo aria
A B A
A piece for a solo singer with an instrumental accompaniment.
Da capo at the end of section B informs the singer they need to return to the beginning to repeat section A.
It was popular in the Baroque period.
Call and response
One part sings a phrase (the call), and another part responds with an answering phrase (the response). This usually occurs between a soloist and a larger group.

32-bar song form
A A B A
Called 32-bar song form because each phrase often lasts for 8 bars. This structure is poplar for the choruses of song in musicals.
Verse-chorus from

in its simple version, verse-chorus from just alternates verses and choruses.
12-bars blues
The 12-bar blues is the 12-bar chord progression given above. It is used in many blues and jazz pieces.
