Textbook only midterm 4 Flashcards
explain the wall street vs community game
two groups treated totally equally
apart from one told they are going to play the wall street game and the other told it will be the community game (but was the same game!)
those playing the community game cooperated on the opening round twice as often as those playing the wall street game
the initial differences were maintained throughout the subsequent rounds of the experiment
the wall street label meant participants adopted a perspective that made maximising their own profits paramount
in contrast the community label increased the appeal of maximising the participants joint outcomes
the game is the same as the prisoners dilema game
explain the game of the prisoners dilema
a situation involving payoffs between two people who must decide whether to cooperate or defect. in the end, trust and cooperation lead to higher joint payoffs than mistrust and defection
best choice is to always both cooperate (both get 5)
if both defect you get 2
if one defects = defector gets 8 and cooperator gets nothing
best thing = always both cooperate
what is kin selection
an evolutionary strategy that favours the reproductive success of one’s genetic relatives, even at the cost to one’s own survival and reproduction
name the stress hormone
cortisol
what does the HPA axis stand for
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal
explain the HPA axis
stressful events activate the amygdala (brain region that processes information related to threat)
amygdala stimulates the hypothalamus
this sends chemical message to the pituitary gland
pituitary gland produces ACTH
ACTH stimulates the adrenal gland near the kidneys
this releases cortisol into the bloodstream
the effects of cortisol on the body
increases heart rate and bp
distributes blood to the appropriate muscles involved in fight or flight
supresses immune system = keep resources just for flight or flight behaviour
