What are teasers?
Boxes that promote different stories inside the paper. Also called promos or skyboxes.
What is the flag/nameplate?
The name of the newspaper at the top of the page.
What is an infographic?
A diagram, chart, map, or list that conveys data in a visual way.
What is a deck/subhead?
A smaller headline that helps add info to the main headline.
What is a display head?
A snazzier headline treatment that adds drama or flair to special stories. Used sparingly on the front page.
What is a jump line?
A line that indicates what page a story continues on.
What is a cutline?
Information about a photo or an illustration. (Also called a caption)
What is reverse type?
Lighter colored words on a darker colored background.
What is a headline?
The story’s title or summary in large enough type so it contrasts with the story’s text.
What is a refer?
A brief reference to a related story elsewhere in the paper.
What is a mug shot?
A small photograph of a person featured in the story.
What is a byline?
The writer’s name, often followed by the publication they work for and other credentials.
What is an initial cap/drop cap?
A large capital letter set into the opening paragraph of a special feature. (Also called a drop cap.)
What is an index?
A directory of contents in a newspaper.
What is a label?
A line and caption used for packaging special items such as graphics, etc.
What is a folio?
A line showing the page number, date, paper’s name, etc. at the top of a page.
What is a jump line?
The page number the story continues from
What is a liftout quote?
A quotation from the story given graphic emphasis. (Also called a pull quote.)
What is a subhead?
A boldfaced line of type used to organize the story and break up gray text.
What is a gutter?
The white space running vertically between elements on the page.
