Tests for Cations Flashcards

1
Q

how do you carry out a flame test?

A

clean a wire loop by dipping it in dilute HCl then holding it in a flame. once you you hold the loop in the flame and it burns without any colour you can dip it into the sample you want to test, then put it back in the blue part of the bunsen flame.

Q

how to test for cations with sodium hydroxide solution?

A
  1. test tube containing test solution
  2. add sodium hydroxide solution drop by drop
  3. swirl after each drop. look carefully for any precipitate
  4. if there is no precipitate, warm the mixture gently with a bunsen burner and test any gas with moist litmus paper.
