Periodic Table - Group 1 Flashcards
What are the group 1 elements known as?
Alkali metals
Lithium reaction with WATER
2Li (s) + H20 (l) —> 2LiOH (aq) + H2 (g)
- reasonably soft
- fizzes and floats
Sodium reaction with WATER
2Na (s) + H20 (l) —> 2NaOH (aq) + H2 (g)
- fairly soft
- fizzes more and floats
- forms a ball
Potassium reaction with WATER
2K (s) + H20 (l) —> 2KOH (aq) + H2 (g)
- lilac flame
- fizzes a LOT (and floats)
when the alkali metals react with water what do they produce?
- hydrogen gas (=fizzing)
- metal hydroxide solution (=alkaline)
Lithium reaction with OXYGEN
4Li (s) + O2 (g) —> 2Li2O (s)
-bright white
Sodium reaction with OXYGEN
4Na (s) + O2 (g) —> 2Na2O (s)
-orange flame
Potassium reaction with OXYGEN
4K (s) + O2 (g) —> 2K2O (s)
-purple flame
Group 1 elements become __________ as you move down the group.
More reactive
what can you use the trend in reactivity to do? (group 1 metals)
Predict how other group 1 metals will react.
eg. you could predict that caesium will react more vigorously than potassium with water- in fact it explodes!
how many electrons do the alkali metals have in their outer shell?
ONE
