Organic Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
a molecule containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only
saturated
a molecule containing NO double bomds
unsaturated
a molecule containing one or more double bonde
homologous series
a sequence of related chemical compounds that have similar chemical properties but differ in formula by a fixed group of atoms (usually CH2).
members of a homologous series exhibit a trend in physical properties
alkanes
a homologous series of saturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n+2
alkenes
a homologous series of unsaturated hydrocarbons with general formula CnH2n
isomers
different compounds with the same molecular formula but difference displayed formulae
polymer
a substance consisting of huge molecules formed by many small molecules bonding together.
polymers have repeating units in their structures
polymers are commonly called plastics
monomers
the small molecules that join together to produce a polymer
addition polymer
a type of polymer formed by adding together monomers (usually alkenes).
