Tests Flashcards
MCV of less than ____ is microcytic
greater than ____ is macrocytic
<80 microcytic
> 100 macrocytic
How much of the bodies iron is stored as ferritin?
305 (in bone marrow, spleen and liver)
Check ___ before supplementing ___ as can cause neurological damage
check vitamin b12 before supplementing folate
can mask b12 deficinecy
iron is mainly absorbed where?
Duodenum
___ is the most sensitive marker of liver function
___ is the most specific
ALT - sensitive
AST - specific
What is the only thing that is high in iron deficiency ?
TIBC
Total iron binding capacity
What is the Schilling test
measures the capacity of the body to absorb B12
What is a reticulocyte
baby red blood cell
How does phenytoin cause megaloblastic anaemia
Folate is present in food in a polyglutamate form, which is then converted into monoglutamates by intestinal conjugase to be absorbed by the jejunum. Phenytoin acts by inhibiting this enzyme, thereby causing folate deficiency
Is ferritin high or low in iron deficiency anaemia?
How does this differ from anaemia of chronic disease
LOW
In chronic disease its high (and the binding capacity TIBC is low)
HOW DO ACE AND NSAIDS CAUSE AKI
NSAIDS cause afferent constriction (blood vessel to the kidney is smaller = less perfused)
ACEi causes efferent dilation (blood vessel away from kidney is bigger = less perfused kidney)
When starting ACEi what drop in creatanine is acceptable
