Tests Flashcards
What is a PT test?
Prothrombin time (PT) is a blood test that measures the time it takes for the liquid portion (plasma) of your blood to clot.
Collected with a light blue topped Coagulation tube
What is a PTT test?
A partial thromboplastin time (PTT) test measures how long it takes for a clot to form in a blood sample
Collected with a light blue coagulation tube
What is a Uric Acid test?
Measures the amount of uric acid in a sample of your blood.
Uric acid is a normal waste product that your body makes when it breaks down chemicals called purines.
Collected in a red top non-additive tube
What is a PSA test?
The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood.
It can help to diagnose prostate cancer.
This is drawn in a Red top non-additive tube
What is a Lipid Panel?
This group of tests measures the amount of cholesterol and other fats in your blood.
A lipid panel measures these fats:
- Total cholesterol
- LDL (“bad”) cholesterol
- HDL (“good”) cholesterol
- Triglycerides, another type of fat that causes hardening of the arteries
Drawn in a Red non-additive tube
What is a Hepatic Panel?
A liver (hepatic) function panel is a blood test to check how well the liver is working.
This is drawn in a Gold/Tiger Top Serum Separator Tube (SST)
What is a BMP?
A basic metabolic panel is a blood test consisting of a set of seven or eight biochemical tests and is one of the most common lab tests ordered by health care providers.
Drawn in a Gold/Tiger Top Serum Seperator Tube (SST)
What is a CMP?
Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
The comprehensive metabolic panel, or chemical screen, is a panel of 14 blood tests that serves as an initial broad medical screening tool.
The 14 tests include alkaline phosphatase(ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, sodium, potassium, carbon dioxide, chloride, albumin, total protein, glucose, and calcium.
It’s also called a metabolic panel, chem 14, chemistry panel, or chemistry screen.
Thisis drawn in a Gold/Tiger Top Serum Seperator Tube
What is an Electrolytes (Lytes) test?
An electrolyte panel, also known as a serum electrolyte test, is a blood test that measures levels of the body’s main electrolytes: Sodium, which helps control the amount of fluid in your body. It also helps your nerves and muscles work properly.
This is drawn in a Light/Dark Green Heparing Tube (PST)
What is an Ammonia test?
Ammonia is also called NH3. It is a normal waste product in your body. Healthy bacteria in your intestines make ammonia when you digest protein in the foods you eat.
Collected in a Light/Dark Green Heparin Tube (PST)
Must be placed on ice IMMEDIATELY
What is a CBC test?
Complete Blood Count
A complete blood count, also known as a full blood count, is a set of medical laboratory tests that provide information about the cells in a person’s blood. The CBC indicates the counts of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets, the concentration of hemoglobin, and the hematocrit.
Drawn in a Lavender EDTA tube because EDTA doesn’t destroy cell morphology
What is a Blood EtOH test?
Blood Alcohol Test
Blood alcohol content, also called blood alcohol concentration or blood alcohol level, is a measurement of alcohol intoxication used for legal or medical purposes. BAC is expressed as mass of alcohol per volume of blood.
Drawn in a Grey Glycolitic Inhibitor tube
What is a Glucose test?
A blood glucose test measures the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It may be used to help diagnose or monitor diabetes.
Drawn in a Grey Glycolitic Inhibitor tube
What is a Lactic Acid test?
This test measures the level of lactate, also called lactic acid, in a sample of your blood. In certain cases, cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) may be used. Normally, you have low levels of lactate in your blood and CFS. High levels of lactate may be a sign of a wide variety of medical conditions.
Drawn in a Gray Glycolytic Inhibitor Tube
