Test tube reactions for functional groups Flashcards
How to test for alcohols?
Use Potassium Dichromate (K₂Cr₂O₇)
Primary and Secondary alcohols will go from orange to green.
Tertiary alcohols will stay orange - no reaction.
How to test for aldehydes?
Use Tollen’s Reagent
Will produce a silver mirror if aldehyde is present.
Ketones will remain the same –> no reaction.
OR
Use Fehling’s Solution
Add a few drops of the solution + anti-bumping granules + gently heat.
Will go blue to red if aldehyde is present.
How to test for an alkene?
Use Bromine Water
Solution will go orange to colourless if alkene is present.
How to test for COOH?
Use sodium carbonate.
Limewater will turn cloudy if COOH is present.
Effervesence - showing presence of CO2 gas
