Test Three Definitions Flashcards
Mineral
A naturally occurring inorganic element or compound having an orderly internal structure, characteristic Chemical composition, physical properties and crystal form
Geologic map
Map showing the distribution of rocks on the surface
Hornblende
A variety of amphibole mineral group
Hornfels
A common name for a metamorphic rock formed by contact metamorphism and characterized by equidimensional grain size and without preferred orientation.
Geothermal gradient
The rate at which temperature increases with depth
Magmatic differentiation
A process by which a variety of igneous rock are formed from a single parent magma
Graben
A block of earths crust with length greater than its width , that has dropped relative to blocks on other sides
Hanging wall
Block of rock that lies above an inclined fault plane
Matrix
Fine grained material that fill the interstices between larger particles in a rock
Mantle plume
A buoyant mass of the hot mantle material that rises to the base of the lithosphere
Mechanical weathering
The disintegration of rocks into smaller fragments by physical processes such as frost wedging
Graded bedding
A type of bedding in which each layer is characterized by progressive decrease in grain size
Leaching
A process by which groundwater dissolves and transport soluble components off rock or soil
Loess
Unconsolidated wind-depisited silt and dust
