Test for Ions Flashcards
1
Q
Test for Sulphate
A
Hydrochloric acid + Barium Chloride -> White precipitate (Barium Sulphate)
2
Q
Test for Carbonate
A
Add HCl, CO2 releases if present, test CO2 with limewater, cloudy colour = present
3
Q
Test for Ammonia
A
Damp Red litmus paper (damp so it can dissolve) turns blue because NH3 is alkaline
4
Q
Test for Ammonium
A
Add hydroxide ions and gently heat (e.g by adding NaOH solution), the reaction releases ammonia gas and water
5
Q
Test for Hydroxides
A
Use PH indicator such as red litmus paper that will turn blue
6
Q
Test for Halides
A
Add Silver Nitrate solution, Cl-White, Br-Cream, Iodine-Yellow precipitate. The Precipitate formed is AgX with X being the halogen.
