Test for Cations & Flame Tests Flashcards
Lithium flame test (Cation)
Red flame
Sodium flame test (Cation)
Yellow flame
Potassium flame test (Cation)
Lilac flame
Calcium flame test (Cation)
Orange-red flame
Copper flame test (Cation)
Green flame
How do you carry out a flame test?
A clean platinum wire loop dipped in HCl and held under a flame. No colour = start the test. Repeat step 1 until flame has no colour.
When sodium hydroxide is added to Copper (II) what colour is achieved in the precipitate? (Cation)
Blue precipitate
When sodium hydroxide is added to Iron (II) what colour is achieved in the precipitate? (Cation)
Sludgy Green
When sodium hydroxide is added to Iron (III) what colour is achieved in the precipitate? (Cation)
Reddish Brown
Test for Carbonates (Anion)
Add HCl. If carbonates are present then CO2 is released.
Test for Sulphate (Anion)
Add HCl, followed by Barium Chloride solution. A white precipitate is formed then the compound was a sulfate.
Test for Halides (Anion) how to do it.
Add dilute nitric acid, followed by silver nitrate solution.
Silver nitrate test - Chlorine
White precipitate
Silver nitrate test - Bromine
Cream precipitate
Silver nitrite test - Iodine
Yellow precipitate
