Group 1 - The Alkali Metals Flashcards
What is the name given to group 1 elements?
The Alkali Metals.
What happens when the elements are placed in water?
They all react vigorously
Why do many elements in the group act the same way?
They all have one electron in the outer shell.
List some group 1 elements.
Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Caesium, Francium
When group 1 elements reacts with water, what products are formed?
A metal Hydroxide Solution + Hydrogen
Why are group 1 elements known as the Alkali metals?
They are all metals, and when they react with water they form an Alkaline (Metal Hydroxide Solution)
The reaction of group 1 elements with water produces fizzing/effervescence. What causes this?
Hydrogen is released.
The reaction of group 1 elements with oxygen in the air produces what products?
Metal Oxides.
What oxide is formed when Lithium reacts with water?
Lithium Oxide (Li2O)
What oxides are formed when Sodium reacts with water?
a mixture of: Sodium Oxide (Na2O) Sodium Peroxide (Na2O2)
What oxides are formed when Potassium reacts with water?
a mixture of: Potassium Peroxide (K2O2) Potassium Superoxide (KO2)
Why do group 1 elements tarnish when left?
They react with the oxygen in air leaving a dull metal oxide layer.
What happens to the reactivity of Elements as you go down group 1?
The reactivity increases.
Which group 1 metal is the least reactive?
Lithium (Li) as it is the first one.
Which is the most reactive out of Lithium, Sodium and Potassium?
Potassium (K). It is the lowest down of the 3.
Name an extremely reactive group 1 element.
Caesium or Francium
Predict what happens in the reaction of caesium and water.
Explosion
As you go down group 1, hat happens to the rate of reaction in elements.
Decreases as they are becoming more reactive.
Explain why group 1 elements become more reactive as you go down the table.
- The outermost electron is getting further from the nucleus.
- Which means forces of attraction are lessened between the nucleus and the outermost electron.
- The outer electron is lost easier and the metals are more reactive.
