Island
How many planets are there?
7 others besides earth in our solar system
What is a solar system?
A solar system is a system of planets that move around a star or sun.
The star is at the centre of the solar system.
All the planets move in specific places around that star.
Explain planets
Planets all move their own path at their own speed. They are all different distances from the sun.
Why do some people think there is life somewhere else in space?
There are lots of stars in the sky and they have their own solar systems.
Name the planets in order from the sun. Spelling correctly.
Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
Name the Dwarf Planet.
Pluto. He is too small to be a planet.
Name the 4 warmest planets
Mercury Venus Earth Mars They are warmer because they are closer to the sun
Name the coldest planets
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune They are furthest from the sun so they are colder.
Describe the sun
The sun is a star in the middle of our solar system.
It is a huge hot fireball of hot burning gas
What does the sun give out?
Energy - heat and light. This is used for survival by plants and animals
How big is the sun?
109 times bigger than earth. It looks small because it is far away from earth.
What would happen if the earth was closer to further from the sun
If earth was closer it would be too cold for us to survive.
Further - too hot to survive
How hot is the centre of the sun
1.3 million degrees celcius
Where does the sun rise and set
Rise - east
Set - west
What is an orbit?
The earth moves around the sun in a path called an orbit
How does the earth move
Orbit around the sun
On it’s own axis
How long does Earth take to complete one trip around the sun?
365 1/4 days
= 1 year divided into 12 months equals 4 seasons.
What is a rotation?
When earth spins in place while in orbit
How long does earth take to make one rotation?
24 hours.
Part of earth facing the sun = daylight
Part of earth away from sun = night
What would happen if the sun disappeared?
All living things would die and earth would become like the other planets in our solar system.
How long does the moon take to orbit the earth?
29 1/2 days. It is called a lunar month
Explain the moon
Ball shaped rock that orbits the earth. Earths natural satellite NO air or water on the moon Humans have walked on the moon Bumps and dents are called craters
Which part of the moon can we see?
The part that the sun shines on. It looks as if it changes shape
Name phases of the moon
New moon Waxing Crescent First quarter (half moon) Waxing gibbous Full moon Waning gibbous Last quarter (half moon) Waxing crescent
What is a satellite
A small object that orbits a larger object in space
What is a cycle
A process that is repeated over and over
What is a crater
a dent in the surface of an object
What is a phase
a change in the moon’s form
What is a gibbous moon
The phase between full moon and quarter moon
What is a pitch
high or low sound
What is a battery
source of electrical energy
What is a vibrate
move quickly backwards and forwards
What is a volume
loud or soft noise
What is a pluck
input energy for a musical istrument
