Define Counterculture
a large group of people in society who express values and behaviours that conflict with society’s norms
Define Political Activism
movements for political change that focus on public activities such as marches, demonstrations, “media events”, and petitions
Define Just Society
a term used by Pierre Trudeau in the 1970s to refer to a Canadian society in which individual freedoms are very important
Define Sexual revolution
a time during the late 1960s and early 1970s when sexual behaviour and morals in North America and Europe changed dramatically

Define Materialism
a way of life with personal or societal values preoccupied with obtaining material possessions
Define Economic Inflation
a sustained increase in the general level of prices for goods and services. It is measured as an annual percentage increase. As inflation rises, every dollar you own buys a smaller percentage of a good or service. The value of a dollar does not stay constant when there is inflation.
Define Recession
a period of temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced, generally identified by a fall in GDP in two successive quarters.
When did the Baby Boomer generation start?
Post WWII 1946-1966
What are the characteristics specific to the Baby Boomer generation?
~largest group in Canada
~in 1996 they made up over 40% of the population of Canada
~although they are older, they are still the largest population group in Canada
What are the Sub Groups?
~Yuppies ~Dinks ~Generation X ~Baby Bust ~Echo Boom
What are Yuppies?
Young Urban Professionals - materialistic lifestyles. High income earners
What are Dinks?
Double Income No Kids - Materialistic lifestyles. High income earners
What is Generation X?
1946-1966
~Characterized as refusing to conform to the values held by earlier generations, preferring to live by their own rules and values
~Generation X were growing up during the a period when divorce rate was on the rise and the nuclear family was losing ground. By the time they were of age, divorce was a readily available option
~Grew up surrounded by materialism but rejected society as meaningless/boring
found it difficult to move into careers already dominated by older boomers
What is the Baby Bust?
1967-1979
~small group born during a period of decline in birth rates
What are Echo Booms?
1980-1985
~Children born to earlier baby boom generations -(Yuppies puppies, Echo kids)
~Unnamed Generation Z 1996 - 2010 (Millennium Kids)
What effect did the Baby Boom have on Infant Mortality?
hospitals needed to accommodate to more babies being born, especially in hospitals (4 out of 5 babies were born in hospitals compared to the 1 out of 5 in previous generation), this lowered infant mortality rate since they had the technology and medical assistance more readily available
What effect did the Baby Boom have on The Nuclear Family?
is parents living with their children. This would change because there were even more of these families since so many children were being born. They would have all been around the same age and would have grown up together
What effect did the Baby Boom have on Child Raising/Child Care?
Hospitals had to expand their maternity wards and new schools needed to be built to keep pace with the growing population. A boom in elementary school construction, and then years later in secondary school construction. Baby formula replaced breast feeding and adult mashed foods of previous generations. Commercial foods were advertised as the modern way to bring up children.
What effect did the Baby Boom have on National Debt?
Today Canadians are left with a sizable national debt, which began to grow after the war. Part of that debt is from borrowing money to educate the baby boomer generation.
What effect did the Baby Boom have on Television Programs?
They presented a stereotypical view of the happy suburban father-led family of the 1950s. They reflected lifestyles of middle class families and shaped the roles played by fathers, mothers, and children.
What factors contributed to urban sprawl/suburbia?
~Post war economy allowed Canada to experience prosperity
~Severe shortage of housing during the pre-war and war period
~Major demand for homes as a result of population growth resulted in the need for construction of new homes to spread outside of urban areas
What were some of the social features of the new suburban culture that developed as a result of urban sprawl?
~Car Culture: Living in suburbia resulted in the need for cars
*shopping plazas, fast food restaurants, drive in movies, etc.
~Numerous young families in suburbia encouraged socialization among suburban families
*sports clubs
*social visits
*religious gatherings
What effect did Dr. Spock have on the upbringing of the Baby Boomers?
~wrote a book and sold 50 million copies of it
~urged parents to trust themselves and not to constantly worry about spoiling their children
~said they should let children develop and grow at their own pace rather than according to the strict schedules and rules advocated by earlier psychologists
~basic philosophy was to respect children because they are human beings who deserve respect and they will grow up to be better people if you do
