what is atherosclerosis?
when plaque builds up and it is restricting blood flow
what is CVA, cerebrovascular accident?
Stroke; small cranial arteriole ruptures and doesn’t receive blood, it dies. Large strokes lead to paralysis.
what is a MI?
myocardial infarction (heart attack), fail delivering blood to heart.
what is hypertension?
high blood pressure 140/90; genetics/lifestyle cause high blood pressure. maintains a healthy body weight.
inspiration is what?
breathing in (inhalation)
what is expiration?
moving away from lungs (exhale)
what is the Pharynx and what happens there?
its the throat; it connects the nasal & oral cavity to the larynx.
what is the larynx and what happens there?
it is a box like structure (made of cartilage) “Voice box” holds vocal chords.
what is the glottis?
It’s the region within your voice box that contains your vocal cords “opening”
what is the epiglottis?
prevents void in voice box, opens & closes. The epiglottis is a small, movable “lid” just above the larynx that prevents food and drink from entering the windpipe
what is the trachea?
“wind pipe”, cilia is found here so its ciliated, filter sweep. mucus secretes mucous here
what is bronchi?
The large air passages that lead from the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs.
what are the bronchioles?
Bronchioles are the smallest air passageways in the lungs, branching from the bronchi and delivering air to the alveoli
what are the alveoli?
“Air sacs”, tiny air sacs within the lungs where gas exchange takes place between inhaled air and the blood
what is otitis media?
middle ear infection caused by bacteria
what is tympanostomy?
tubes in ear; if it is a recurring ear infection
tonsillitis is what?
tonsils become inflamed or enlarged
tonsillectomy is?
removal of tonsils
what is laryngitis?
infection of the larynx (Hoarse)
what is pneumonia?
bacterial/ viral, bronchi filled with fluid
what is tuberculosis?
bacterial infection, (TB) is a contagious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It typically affects the lungs but can also spread to other parts of the body.
what is COPD?
chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders, lung disease that makes it hard to breathe
chronic bronchitis is what?
a lung condition characterized by long-term inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes (airways in the lungs)
what is emphysema?
alveoli surface area is reduced, it limits gas exchange, lungs lose elasticity, heart & brain are effected, lack of oxygen, caused from smoking
what is asthma?
breathing, coughing, mucous, animal scent can make it worse, spasm reduce diameter of airways.
