Test 1 Flashcards
Chondthricthyes Classification
Cartilaginous fish- sharks, rays,scates
what do chondthricthyes have?
skeleton of cartilages, lateral line system (sense pressure in water), keen sense of smell, part of the brain is double the size of the rest of the brain.
Osteichthyes classification are?
(Bony Fish)
Amphibia Classification are?
(Land/Water) Frogs, toad, salamanders
tetrapods are?
two sets of paired limbs - larynx, small lungs, exchange gases through skin, 3 chamber heart, right and left
Reptilia classification have?
keratinized scales, desiccation (Protects from predators/drying out), snakes use tongue as sense organ, well developed lungs, leathery flexible egg, ectothermic (body temperature is the external environment)
Aves Classification means what?
Aviation - Air
features of Aves classification?
feathers, hard shelled egg, 4 chamber heart, endothermic (internal temperature remains constant), waste exit is “Cloaca”, Magnatite (Magnetic stone in some birds to help with navigation)
features of the Mammalia classification
hair for insulation, mammary glands (Milk Production), endothermic, 4 chamber heart
mammalia orders?
monotremes, marsupials, placentals
monotremes do what?
lay eggs, spiney anteater & duck bill platypus
marsupials do what?
born immature, remain in mothers pouch
Placentals consist of what features?
largest group*, young develop in female uterus, usually have well developed brain and lungs, 4 chamber heart, endothermic (control internal temperature, hair (insulation), differentiated teeth (different shape) associated with animal diets
Order Primate features?
nails (instead of claws), shortened snout (allows eyes on front), Most have color vision (Coned cells), one birth at a time with a period of dependency, primates have animal behavior
Animal behavior is?
any action can be observed and described, genetic basis (inherited), endocrine and nervous systems work together to control all other systems, FAP (fixed action patterns) - always performed the same way each time, some behaviors are learned - learning is a durable or lasting change in behavior brought about by experience.
operant conditioning is?
gradually strengthening the stimulus response connection. (B.F. Skinner
Learning is?
to make a particular response to only one type of animal or object
Imprinting is?
learned during a sensitive period (When children are abused they miss out)
sexual selection is?
adaptive changes in males and females that lead to an increased ability to secure a mate.
Males - changes increase ability to compete for a mate
females - it increases ability to select a mate with the best fitness.
Fitness is?
the measure of the ability of an organism to produce fertile off spring
