Test 2 Trauma : Thoracic Trauma Flashcards
Thoracic Trauma Physiologic Consequences :
- Hypoxia, Hypercarbia, & Acidosis
- **Hypoxia Most serious consequences **
Live-Threatening Thoracic Injuries
- Manage Airway Control
- Decompression of chest
Primary Survey of Thoracic Injuries
**Begins with airway **
* Recognize & address any other major injuries affecting airway
* Airway obstruction due to swelling, bleeding, or vomitus
* Laryngeal injury (can lead to obstruction lead to life threatening injury)
* Posterior dislocation of clavicular head
* Penetrating trauma involving neck or chest
* Look for any evidence of air hunger (muscles retraction )
Inspect oropharynx for foreign body obstruction
* Listen for air movement (nose, mouth, lungs)
Any evidence of partial upper airway obstruction (stridor)
* Palpate for any crepitus
* Cyanosis is a late sign of hypoxia trauma patients (difficult to see dark skin)
Tracheobronchial Tree Injury
- Injury to trachea or major bronchus
- Unusual but potentially fatal
- Majority die at scene
- High Mortality
- Occurs within 1 inch (2.54 cm) of caarian
- Inadequate airway
- Development of tension Pneumothorax or tension Pneumopericadium
