Test 2: Primitive Reflexes Flashcards
Rooting Reflex (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist baby to find food, breastfeeding | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 3 months | Stimulus: Stroke/touch to the cheek | Response: Baby opens mouth and turns head toward stroke | Signs of Retention: Picky eater, thumb sucking, speech issues
Suck Swallow (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist coordination of feeding and respiration | Origin: 28-34 weeks GA | Integration: 5 months | Stimulus: Touch to lips and mouth | Response: Rhythmic jaw movement and swallowing | Signs of Retention: Sucking on fingers, thumbs, clothes
Palmer Grasp (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist in grasp development | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 4-7 months | Stimulus: Touch or pressure to palm | Response: Hand closes around object | Signs of Retention: Poor fine motor skills, handwriting difficulties
Plantar Grasp (Primitive)
Purpose: Protects sole of the foot | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 9 months | Stimulus: Pressure to the sole of foot | Response: Toes curl | Signs of Retention: Poor balance, delayed walking
Moro Reflex (Primitive)
Purpose: Arouses survival instinct | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 3-5 months | Stimulus: Sudden extension of the head | Response: Arm extension and abduction followed by flexion and adduction | Signs of Retention: Sensory overload, hypersensitivity
ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist in birth and develop cross-pattern movements and assist coming out of birth canal | Origin: 20 weeks GA | Integration: 4-5 months | Stimulus: Turn head to one side | Response: Arm and leg on same side extend, opposite side flex | Signs of Retention: Difficulty with hand-eye coordination, writing, and crossing midline
Spinal Galant (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist with birth, crawling and creeping | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 3 months (up to 9 months) | Stimulus: Stroke along spine | Response: Trunk flexes toward stimulated side | Signs of Retention: Fidgeting, bedwetting, concentration issues
Cross Extension (Primitive)
Purpose: Enhance postural support during limb withdrawal | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 1-2 months | Stimulus: Hold one leg in extension, apply pressure to foot | Response: Opposite leg flexes, abducts, extends | Signs of Retention: None
Flexor Withdrawal (Primitive)
Purpose: Protect from noxious stimuli such as pain or heat | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 1-2 months | Stimulus: Stroke sole of foot | Response: Entire limb flexes | Signs of Retention: None
Stepping Reflex (Primitive)
Purpose: Prepares for walking | Origin: 37 weeks GA | Integration: 2 months | Stimulus: Support baby upright and allow feet to touch surface | Response: Baby takes reciprocal steps | Signs of Retention: None
Proprioceptive Placing (UE/LE) (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist with motor coordination | Origin: 34 weeks GA | Integration: 2 months | Stimulus: Scrape dorsum of hand or foot on surface edge | Response: Lifts limb and places sole or palm on surface | Signs of Retention: None
STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) (Primitive)
Purpose: Prepares for crawling | Origin: 4-6 months | Integration: 8-12 months | Stimulus: Flex or extend head | Response: Head flexion causes arm flexion and leg extension; head extension causes arm extension and leg flexion | Signs of Retention: Difficulty sitting still, poor muscle tone
Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) (Primitive)
Purpose: Develop spatial awareness, balance, and motor skills | Origin: Birth | Integration: 4-6 months | Stimulus: Head position determines limb posture | Response: Flexion causes limb flexion, extension causes limb extension | Signs of Retention: Poor balance, poor posture
Purpose: Assist baby to find food, breastfeeding | Origin: 28 weeks GA | Integration: 3 months | Stimulus: Stroke/touch to the cheek | Response: Baby opens mouth and turns head toward stroke | Signs of Retention: Picky eater, thumb sucking, speech issues
Rooting Reflex (Primitive)
Purpose: Assist coordination of feeding and respiration | Origin: 28-34 weeks GA | Integration: 5 months | Stimulus: Touch to lips and mouth | Response: Rhythmic jaw movement and swallowing | Signs of Retention: Sucking on fingers, thumbs, clothes
Suck Swallow (Primitive)
