Test 2: Righting/Equilibrium Flashcards
Labyrinthine Head Righting (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Corrects body orientation when displaced | Origin: 0-2 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Tilt subject while blindfolded | Response: Head orients to vertical position
Optical Righting (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Helps head orient using visual input | Origin: 0-2 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Observe movement (not blindfolded) | Response: Rights head and body in relation to environment
Landau (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Assists motor control of the back and spatial orientation | Origin: 3-4 months | Integration: 12-24 months | Stimulus: Horizontal suspension | Response: Head raises, extension of shoulders, back, hips, knees
Neonatal Neck on Body Righting (NNOB) (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Supports head in upright position | Origin: 34 weeks GA | Integration: 4-5 months | Stimulus: Turn head to one side | Response: Body log-rolls following head movement
Neonatal Body on Body Righting (NBOB) (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Supports head in upright position | Origin: 34 weeks GA | Integration: 4-5 months | Stimulus: Flex knee, rotate pelvis | Response: Upper trunk and head log-roll with body
Body Righting Acting on Head (BOH) (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Keeps body oriented to the ground regardless of head position | Origin: 0-2 months | Integration: 5 years | Stimulus: Blindfolded in prone or side lying, rotate hip | Response: Trunk and head align with body
Otoliths, tactile, proprio
Neck Righting Acting on the Body (NOB) (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Maintains body orientation in space | Origin: 4-6 months | Integration: 5 years | Stimulus: Rotate head | Response: Trunk and lower extremities follow segmentally
proprioceptors of neck
Body Righting Acting on the Body (BOB) (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Keeps body oriented to ground | Origin: 4-6 months | Integration: 5 years | Stimulus: Flex hip and rotate | Response: Upper trunk and head follow segmentally
- Asymmetrical contact of body on support surface
- Labyrinths proprioceptors lumbar area
Protective Extension (UE) (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Prevents falling injury | Origin: 6-7 months (forward or inverted), 7-8 months (side), 9-10 months (backward) | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Displace balance | Response: Extend extremity to catch fall
Protective Extension (LE) (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Prevents falling | Origin: 4 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Plunge feet toward surface | Response: Knee extension, hip abduction, dorsiflexion
Protective Staggering (LE) (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Prevents falling by catching self | Origin: 15-18 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Push quickly in all directions | Response: Steps to catch self in appropriate direction
Receptor: Vestibular (proprioceptive, visual)
Tilting Reaction (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Maintains balance when base of support tilts | Origin: Prone - 6 months, supine/seated - 7-8 months, all 4’s - 9-12 months, standing - 12-21 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Tilt surface | Response: Trunk flexes and head orients to upward side. Head turns toward up side as well as extension and abduction of the extremities on that side.
Postural Fixation (Equilibrium Reaction)
Purpose: Maintains balance against external forces | Origin: Prone - 6 months, supine/seated: 7-8 months, all 4’s - 9-12 months, standing - 12-21 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Apply external force | Response: Counterbalance with trunk movement and ankle adjustments
- Vestibular, proprioceptive, vision
Purpose: Corrects body orientation when displaced | Origin: 0-2 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Tilt subject while blindfolded | Response: Head orients to vertical position
Labyrinthine Head Righting (Righting Reflex)
Purpose: Helps head orient using visual input | Origin: 0-2 months | Integration: Persists for life | Stimulus: Observe movement (not blindfolded) | Response: Rights head and body in relation to environment
Optical Righting (Righting Reflex)
