Period of time C. 1040-266 BCE. Confucius was born in the middle of this era, during The Warring States period.
Zhou Dynasty
The early Zhou Dynasty’s characterization of highest/ultimate power. Means heaven/sky/day. A mostly impersonal, universal moral authority. Human ruler holds the “Mandate of Heaven”.
Tian
Kong Qui, Kong Fuzi (“Master Kung”). Lived from c. 551-479 BCE. Did not consider himself an original thinker. Said he was only a “Transmitter of Tradition”. Promoted universal education for all social classes. Did not write texts. Founder of Confucianism
Confucius
A proimary Confucian classic. Classic of changes/divination (natural science). Cosmology, how they understand the universe and how it comes into being. Recognizing the pattern of things and acting accordingly.

Sayings of Confucius. In the secondary books.

The Analects
A disciple of Confucius born approximately 100 years after his death. Taught that human beings are naturally good and the reason why evil exists is because people havent educated themselves, so if they educate themselves the natural good of human nature will come out.
Mencius
The writings of mencius are just refered to by his name.
Said human nature is inherently bad. Goodness comes from imposing strict discipline.
Xunzi
“the way”. The underlying foundation from which everything comes.
Dao
First emergence is the distiction between these. Dynamic balance, one is always flowing into the other. They are not good and evil. Good is the balance of these and evil is the imbalance of these. The interaction of these make up all the things in the world. “The 10 Thousand things”
Yin/Yang
Goodness/benevolence/humanity. Made up of the characters for “human” and “two”. Originally a value made only for the junzi, but Confucius made it universal.
