Test #2 CH5 Flashcards
Cerebral angiography
Uses the infusion of radio-opaque dye into a cerebral artery to visualize the cerebral circulatory system during x-ray photography
-localizes vascular damage
X ray photography
each molecule through which the beam passes, absorbs some of the radiation.
effective in characterizing internal structures that duffer substantially from their surroundings in the degree to which they absorb X-rays
ex: a bone in flesh
Contrast x-ray techniques
involve injecting into one compartment of the body a substance–> then absorbs x-rays either less than or more than the surrounding tissue
–> injected tissue heightens the contrast between the compartment and surrounding tissure during x-ray photography
Computed tomograpgy
computer assisted x ray producer that can be used t visualize the brain and other internal structures of the living body
- it’s a large cylinder where people are placed in the middle
- 8 or 9 scans are taken showing a three dimensional part of the brain
Functions of the competed tomography
one side of the cylinder is the x-ray tube that projects the x-ray beamthrought the head to an X-ray detector mounted on the other side
-The tube and detector rotates around the head at one level of the brain, taking individual X-ray photos
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
high resolution images are constructed form the measurement of waves that hydrogen atoms emit when they are activated by radio frequency waves in a magnetic field
-Clearer images than computed tomography (CT)
Spatial resolution
the ability to detect and represent differences in spatial location)
Positron emission tomography (PET)
provides images of brain activity (functional brain imaging)
- colored map of the amount of radioactivity that were most active 30 seconds during scan
- identifying particular molecules of interest (neurotransmitters, receptors, transporters)
What is one common version of PET?
2-deoxyglucose (2-DG)
2-deoxyglucose
2-dg injection,
scan will indicate the areas o the brain level that were most active during the 30 seconds of activity
Lingands
ions or molecules that bind to other molecules under investigation
Functional MRI
Produce images representing the increase in oxygen for in the blood to active alas of the brain
