Test 2 Flashcards
What is the acronym that we use to remember the correct order of the hormones in the menstrual cycle?
F. FSH
O. Oestrogen
L. LH
P. Progesterone
What do the hormones FSH, LH, oestrogen and progesterone do?
FSH- Causes an egg follicle to mature
Oestrogen- Builds up the uterus lining
LH- Causes ovulation
Progesterone- Maintains the uterus lining
What does progesterone inhibit?
FSH
To prevent more eggs maturing
DNA is a polymer made up of monomers called what?
Nucleotides
What is the structure of DNA?
• double helix
• complimentary base pairs
• sugar-phosphate backbone
What are reflexes?
Automotive, very fast, protective responses
What is the order of a reflex?
- Stimulus
- Receptor
- Sensory Neurone
- Relay Neurone
- Motor Neurone
- Effector (muscle or gland)
- Response
What is Fermentation and what is the word equation?
Fermentation is anaerobic respiration in yeast.
Glucose —> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts which control rate of cell reactions E.g. respiration and photosynthesis
What are the two parts of an enzyme substrate complex?
Active site
Substrate
*They are both complimentary to each over. They are specific as they only work with one substrate.
How does temperature effect enzymes?
If temp is too high: Enzymes become denatured leading to irreversible change to the enzymes structure
If temp is too low: there is not enough kinetic energy therefore there are less collisions leading to less enzyme substrate complexes.
