Gaps (premocks) Flashcards
What is the order of DNA replication?
- Transcription (DNA unzips into mRNA)
- Translation (mRNA is read and a protein is made)
What is transcription?
In the nucleus, the DNA gets unzipped and a copy of the DNA sequence is made.
This copy is a molecule called messenger RNA (or mRNA) and it’s the transcript that will be used to make the protein.
What is translation?
The mRNA, leaves the nucleus, and goes into the cytoplasm where it joins with the ribosomes, which read the copied code and begin to create proteins, placing one amino acid at a time in a specific order
What order is the cell cycle?
G1. Cell growth
S. DNA replication
G2. Preparation for mitosis
M. Cell division (mitosis)
Where are the following hormones secreted?
FSH, LH, progesterone, oestrogen
FHS & LH) pituitary gland
Progesterone & oestrogen) ovaries
What hormone does the pancreas produce when blood sugar is too high and what does it do?
Insulin
Converts excess glucose into glycogen which is stored in the liver
What hormone does the pancreas secrete when blood sugar is too low and what does it do?
Glucagon
It converts glycogen into glucose to raise blood sugar
