test 2 Flashcards
Chemistry
The study of matter and how it changes
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space (Solid liquid gas food water air)
Categories of matter
Pure substances and mixtures
Pure substance
Matter fixed with a composition and definite properties (Elements ,compounds , atom, compound, molecule, chemical formula)
Mixture
Physical accommodation of more than one pure substance which can be physically into its parts
Two subcategories of mixtures
Heterogeneous and homogeneous
Solution
A homogeneous mixture that remains constantly in uniformly mixed and has particles that are so small that they cannot be seen with a microscope ( sugar water or iced tea)
Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in it which is the particles settle ( muddy water and Italian dressing)
Properties of matter
Chemical and physical
Five examples of physical properties
Shape color odor texture hardness
Examples of chemical properties
Reactivity flammability light sensitivity
Signs of chemical change
1 Production of gas
2 Change of color
3 production of a solid without cooling
4 Change in temperature
States of matter
SOLID characteristics
a. Fixed volume
b. Fixed shape
LIQUID characteristics
a. Fixed volume
b. No fixed shape
GAS characteristics
a. No fixed volume
b. No fixed shape
Melting
Solid to liquid
Evaporation
Liquid to gas
Sublimation
Solid to gas
Freezing
Liquid to solid
Condensation
Gas to liquid
Law of conservation of energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed
Homogeneous
Mixture where parts evenly mixed
Heterogeneous
Mixture where parts are not evenly mixed
Law of conservation of mass
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but the matter can only change form
