Abstract

Four roles of the artist

- Make functional objects and buildings more pleasurable and elevate them or Imbue them with meaning
- Give form to the immaterial hidden or universal truths, spiritual forces, personal feelings
Representational
A style of artwork that portrays natural objects in recognizable form

Outline
The edge of a shape or figure depicted by an actual line drawn or painted on the surface
Geoglyph
A large design or motif produced on the ground and typically form by rocks or durable elements of the landscape, land drawing
Contour line
The perceived lines that Mark the border of an object in space, create the illusion of a 3-D form
Implied line
A line created by movement or direction, such as the line established by a pointing finger, the direction of a glance, or a body moving through space
Shape
A two dimensional area, the boundaries of which are measured in terms of height and width
Figure- ground relation
The relationship between a work of art (the figure) and the surface upon which the work is made (the ground)
Graphic design
The use of some images, typography, and technology to communicate ideas for a client or to a particular audience
Mass
A form with dimensions of height, width, and depth that occupies volume in space
Negative space
Empty space, surrounded and shaped so that it requires a sense of form or volume
Figure ground reversal
The relationship between the work of art and its background is interchangeable
Yin yang
A symbol derived from ancient Chinese philosophy, recognizes the complementary nature of opposing forces; or, the balance of opposites
Space
In 3-D art, the actual area in which the forms exist; in 2D art, the area a flat surface and the illusion on that flat surface of an actual 3-D area in which forms exist
Hatching
An area of closely spaced parallel lines to create the effect of shading or modeling
Cross hatching
Two or more sets of a roughly parallel and overlapping lines, set at an angle to one another, in order to imply a three dimensional surface
Atmospheric perspective
A technique designed to suggest 3-D space in the 2D of the picture, and in which forms and objects distant from the viewer become less distinct, often bluer and cooler in color, and contrast among the various distant elements is greatly reduced
Chiaroscuro
In drawing and painting, the use of light and dark to create the effect of a three dimensional modeled surface
Tenebrism
And especially great contrast of light and dark employed for impact and dramatic affect; from the Italian TENEBROSO, meaning murky
Complementary colors
Pairs of colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel
Simultaneous contrast
A property of complementary colors when placed side-by-side, resulting in the fact that both appear brighter and more intense than when seen and isolation
Afterimage effect
When the eye seesThe complementary color of something that the viewer has spent an extended time viewing
Analogous colors
Pairs of colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel
