Test 1 (Lecture 1) Flashcards
What is agreement reality?
Includes those things we consider real because we have been told that they are real, and everyone seems to agree they are real. We can’t all know things through personal experiences, so things are set up so we can simply believe what others tell us.
What is experiential reality?
those things we know from direct experience
What is methodology?
a system of methods used in a particular area of study or activity.
- eg. qualitative / qualitative / ethnography / case study
- methodology is made up of the study design & the methods
- methodology is your approach to research
- different from methods, - methods describe what is being used for gathering data (eg. questionnaire, survey), while methodology is the approach
What does empirical mean?
based on, concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic
What is replication?
duplicating a study to see if the same evidence and conclusions are produced
What is the Scientific Method? (6)
- observation
- research topic area
- hypothesis
- test with experiment
- analyze data
- Report conclusions
What is Inaccurate Observation?
failing to properly observe things
Replication helps to safeguard against this:
What is Overgeneralization?
What is Selective Observation?
only focusing on one aspect (ignoring others)
What is Ex post facto Hypothesizing?
basically means making stuff up. Which is fine if it doesn’t stop there. One must continue to research this new claim. “the development of hypotheses ‘predicting’ relationships that have already been observed, is invalid in science”
Why learn research methods? (5)
- Better able to understand data / research
- Able to better help clients
- Helps us to understand the validity of programs
- Able to advocate for social work with facts/data/research
- Helps with getting funding
What is realism?
Realism involves a view that there is a concrete world of objects (including other humans) external to and independent of the individual human mind or consciousness, that is knowable through the senses and the processes of the brain, i.e. it can be known by consciousness.
Facts are out there just waiting to be discovered
What is multiple realities?
There is no one reality
What is “beyond reasonable doubt”:?
legal burden of proof required to affirm a conviction in a criminal case…This means that the prosecution must convince the jury that there is no other reasonable explanation that can come from the evidence presented at trial.
