- armed conflict from 2001 to 2021, direct response to the 9/11 attacks
- war began over 20 years ago but impact is still current
- afghanistan remains one of the poorest countries in the world (taliban rule)
- since invading, US have spent $2.313 trillion on the war
- bulk of money has been spent on counter-insurgency operations and needs of troops
- shows they value their health and safety
- not only financial cost, also human cost
- more than 450 uk troops have died and a further 21,000 us solderiers have been injured in action

- other impacts are largely important too but less chance of them being severe
