- as of 2018, approximately 27% of scottish criminals and 46% of uk lawbreakers would reoffend and be reconvicted within one year of release
- second highest proportion of people in prison each year is for drug offences at aprox 15%
- in 2019, scottish gov made extension to rule of thumb that sentences of 12 months or less should only be imposed if no other is appropriate
- rise of 2400 to 3550 in assaults on staff

A
- ant mcpartlin fined £86k for drunk driving in 2018
- compared to normal citizen this amount of money is not a big deal
- criminals have failed to pay more than £5 million of fines imposed by courts in scotland

- in the past 40 years, prisons have begun to add rehabilitation to their lists of functions
- helps those with problems in education, literacy and unemployment
- allows them to have a better chance of living in normality again
- this is most effective when it comes to the rate of reoffending

- in scotland, 1.26 million hours of unpaid work was completed across every community over the year
- increase against 2016-17
- official figures have revealed that almost a third of scottish criminals who are handed community sentences fail to complete punishment
- only 67% of the 19,136 CPOs handed out in 2016/17 were completed

- equipment is sometimes faulty
- more than 100 of the straps were faulty
