Disenfranchised grief
Occurs when a loss is experienced but cannot be openly acknowledged because societal norms do not define the loss as a loss within its traditional definition.
Anticipatory grief
Occurs before the loss, is associated with an acute, chronic, or terminal illness in the loved one
Dysfunctional grief
The person who has lost a loved one exhibits prolonged emotional instability and a lack of progression to successful coping with the loss
Perceived loss
Loss is experienced by one person and cannot be verified by others
Actual loss
Loss that can be identified by others and may arise either in response to or in anticipation of a situation

The absence of something desired or previously believed to be available
Mourning
The outward and social expression of loss
Bereavement
The inner feelings and outward reactions of the individual, includes both grief and mourning
