recitative
A type of singing in which the soloist adopts the rhythm and delivery of ordinary speech to move the plot forward

A musical technique perfected by the Mannheim Orchestra in the 18th century in which a rising figure (a scale or arpeggio) speeded up and grew louder as it rose higher and higher

Emphasis on originality and individuality, personal emotional expression, and freedom and experimentation of form
rondo form
A piece of music where the musical material stated at the beginning of the piece keeps returning.
rounded binary form
The material at the beginning of the first section returns, often shortened, after a contrasting phrase at the beginning of the second section
rubato
Italian for “robbed time”. Rhythmic flexibility for speeding up or slowing down
scherzo and trio
A brisk lively movement, developed from the minuet, with a contrastive middle section
serenade
A musical composition or performance delivered in honour of someone or something
sonata cycle
A musical structure generally consisting of three main sections: an exposition, a development, and a recapitulation
sonata form
Formal structure often used in the first movement of a sonata cycle.
