chromatic harmony
Chords that build on or include notes that aren’t part of the key
Classicism
Emphasizes balance, order, harmony, and rationality, highlighting a pursuit of ancient values and aesthetic principles.
clavier
A German word for keyboard instruments other than the organ.
coda
Latin for “tail” (cauda) / a concluding section reaffirming the tonic key.
col legno
Italian for “with the wood” / Players tap on the strings with the wooden part of their bows.
concerto
A popular instrumental genre of the Baroque era for soloist(s) and orchestra.
counterpoint
Combination of two or more independent melodic lines. Also referred to as “polyphonic texture”
countersubject
A recurring countermelody. Accompanies entries of the subject and answer.
cyclical structure
Any compositional form characterized by the repetition, in a later movement or part of the piece, of motives, themes, or whole sections from an earlier movement in order to unify structure.
da capo aria
A vocal form used primarily in the Baroque Era.
It is in ternary form (ABA’).
Section A: tonic key
Section B: often minor key with mood frequently being more reflective.
development
The second main section in sonata form.
Dies irae
The opening words of a Latin hymn on the Last Judgment.

A song structure that does not repeat entire sections of the music.
episode
A passage within a fugue in which neither subject nor answer is present.
