A musical style that evolved in the late 20th century.
Characterized by the repetition of melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic patterns with little variation.
modal scales
A group of eight successive pitches, with no pitch skipped and the first and last tone repeated.
monophonic textures
A single line of unaccompanied melody.
motive
A short melodic or rhythmic fragment used to build a melody.
musical
A unique genre developed in the US
A play with spoken dialogue but featuring musical numbers: songs, dances, choruses.
nationalism in music
The consciousness of the distinctive features of a nation and the intent to reveal, emphasize, and glorify those features
opera
Drama that is sung
Combines vocal and instrumental music with drama (acting), visual arts (costume and scenery), and often dance.
oratorio
A dramatic musical composition based on a religious theme
ornamentation
The embellishment of a melody, either by adding notes or by modifying rhythms.
