Anterior , ventral

ex. sternum in front of heart
posterior , dorsal
structure being more in back than another structure
back surface
superior , cranal , rostral
structure being closer to the head or higher than another structure of the body
inferior , caudal
structure being closer to the feet or the lower part of the body than another structure in the body
Medial
structure closer to the median plane than another structure of the body
Lateral
structure further away from the median plane
Proximal
only reference to limbs
- structure being closer to the median plane or root limb than another structure in limb
- towards the point of attachment of the limb to the body
distal
only reference to limbs
- structure being further away from the median plane of the root of the limb than the other structure in the limb
- further away from point of attachment
Plantar
on or towards the sole of the foot ( bottom)
dorsum
uppermost surface of the foot (top)
superficial
reference point on the chest wall
structure closer to the surface of the body is superficial
( sternum is superficial to heart)
- on or close to the surface of the body
deep
further away from the surface is deep
-further away from the surface of the body
ipsilateral
on the same side as the reference point
contral lateral
on opposite side of the reference point
