MELTING POINT
The temperature at which the solid and liquid phases of a substance are in equilibrium under the external pressure of one atmosphere.
MELTING POINT RANGE. How do we determine if a compound is pure?
Consists of two temperatures - the first is the temperature at which the first drop of liquid appears amongst the crystals and the second is the temperature at which the whole mass of crystals turns to a clear liquid. The purer the compound, the narrower the m.p. range.
MIXED MELTING POINT
If two compounds are mixed and have a melting point intimate of the two, the compounds are identical. If two compounds are mixed and their melting point is far below that of the individual component, they are different.
