Terms & Definitions Lab 1 Flashcards
AZEOTROPE. When and How does this mixture form?
A mixture of two (or more) substances that distills at a constant temperature and with a constant composition, even though separately the components have different boiling points. This usually occurs when intermolecular interactions (H-Bonding) take place.
BOILING POINT (B.P.). How is b.p. used to determine a pure substance?
The temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid is equal to the atmospheric pressure. The b.p. is constant for a pure substance.
CONDENSATE/DISTILLATE
Condensate: The liquid that results when a gas is cooled. Distillate: The condensed liquid obtained from distillation
DISTILLATION
The two-part process in which (1) a liquid is boiled, thereby converting it to a vapour; and (2) the vapour is then recompensed to a liquid and collected in a different container from the original one.
SLURRY
A suspension of the fine solid particles in a liquid
VOLATILE
Tending to evaporate under ordinary temperature and conditions
