a series of laws passed by the british government that limited colonial trade and made it more beneficial for britain.
the great awakening
religious revival in the colonies led by preachers like george whitefield and jonathan edwards where religion and sermons became more emotional and focused on personal connections with God.
george whitefield
an english minister who preached around the colonies and contributed to spreading the spiritual revival.
the enlightenment
a western philosophical movement in the 1700s where people became more focused on reason and science rather than religion.
deism
a religion influenced by the enlightenment where people believed in God but thought he simply created the world then withdrew from involvement with humans. believed God had instilled in them righteousness so followed natural laws.
john locke
philosopher whose ideas about government and human rights were important for enlightenment and eventually the revolution.
french and indian war
war between france and britain that started in america and spread to europe. ended with france surrendering and british colonists gianing a ton of land from them.
proclamation of 1763
after colonists fought for and won land in the west from the french, british government declared they could not settle any further than the appalachian mountains (in the west).
stamp act of 1765
british law that placed tax on paper products in the colonies. sought to raise money for the british army.
sons of liberty
a group formed by american colonists in the early years of the revolution. they protested taxation and fought for independence.
