Terms (1) Flashcards
Elasticity
A metal property that makes the Propagation of Ultrasonic waves possible
Vibrations
How sound Propagates through a material
- Domino effect of atoms
Cycle
A particle that is displaced from rest position in one direction and another before returning to its rest position
Frequency
The number of Cycles per second
Wavelength
The distance a wave travels during a cycle over time
Period of a Cycle
The time required to complete one Cycle
Angle of Incidence
The angle at which a wave strikes an interface
- Measured between the wave line and a line 90° from the interface surface
Normal Incidence
When the Angle of Incidence strikes an interface head on (at 90°)
Acoustic Impedance
A materials resistance to Propagation from an Ultrasonic wave
Acoustic Impedance Mismatch
When there is an interface between two materials with a different Acoustic Impedance
Propagation
Vibrations, between particles within a material
- From elasticity and density
- Propagated means to move
Amplitude
How far a particle has been pushed out of it’s rest position
Velocity
Sound travels at different velocity in different materials.
- depends on elasticity and density
- sound travels faster in solids than liquids, gases because of density
Sound Propagation
Pushing a particle out of place and it wanting to return to rest but will have a “swinging” effect before doing so
